Was wondering what everyone thinks about the possibility of Chrysler being purchased by GM, and what the possible implications might be?

Hi 24v6spd!

That would be a terrible thing as far as I'm concerned since GM and their preposterous decision to assassinate Oldsmobile was the reason I became a full fledged Mopar man in the first place.

My wife drives a 2006 Caravan and it's been a really good vehicle for us. We plan to run it as long as possible because it suits our needs, but if and when we need another, and when and if GM buys/owns Chrysler, it will be a difficult decision for me to do business with them again.

In my mind, any Corporation stupid enough to have killed off Oldsmobile, the oldest existing U.S. automobile manufacturer, will do similarly stupid things to their Chrysler line if they obtain it. Seems I saw somewhere just the other day that GM was out of "spending money" anyway.

It is my fervent hope that Chrysler stays as it is. If it has to be sold, anyone in the world other than GM would be okay by me.

What will happen?
Capitalism as we knew it is over.
We have really always had industries that were too important to
fail at given times in our history.

Now, some corporations have become so large that we cannot
allow them to fail because of the pain that follows. I think the
Bank Bailout is the largest Bank robbery in history. But the theft
didn't occur in Sept of this year, it's been going on during the past
decade of deregulation and look the other way, nobody at the
wheel government.

The Bailout isn't the actual theft, it's the cost of keeping business
that is too important to fail going, till a real solution is agreed upon.
It's the cost of a broken government and a faltering society.
It seems, that running an entity that is responsible for and
answerable to over 300 million people is nearly impossible. :?

Several tactics have been used against the American people
to maintain control. And our society didn't invent them. Free
bread and entertainment works pretty well. Profesional sports
distract a lot of people, so do hobbies like maintaining old trucks.
Fear, has always worked well and is generally justifiable.

Now we have an era where a lot of people and collectively special
interest groups have managed to get what they wanted.
A lot of people in this country have benefited
from globalization.
Did you?
Buy almost anything from WALMART for less.

Or anything made in China or other countries with similar
or worse trade practices.

Drive a car made elsewhere or made by a company
owned elsewhere?

Get live help from someone with an odd impression of
a midwestern accent(India)?

Or take advantage of cheap credit that was available
because of banks cheating on their balance sheets.

And if you like eating you might look up the definition of
hypocrite before complaining about the people that harvest
and process most of what we shove in our mouths.

Since higher gas prices helped curb consumption (waste).
Maybe higher food prices would help us with our unattractive
spreads. Maybe if a #1 supersized was $15 we would look
better?

Actually, since we're on that subject, that is what's coming.
Inflation that will confuse us as much as it did our grandparents.
Ever talk to your Grandad about a PreWar budget of $45 a week?
Rent was $18. He had a pretty good job in Southern Calif, and
some midwestern smarts. 18 Bucks a week. We can't figure any
of that out, because to us those #s don't mean anything.

Well thats one thing the Government is completely in control of.
M1 the money supply. How much more will they have to print?
As much as it takes. The Consumer Price Index has decieved us
into thinking there was moderate to low inflation (except energy).
In fact anything that had intensive US labor involved went thru
the roof or out of business, or switched to low cost domestic
(hypocrites use other divisive terms) labor.

The more $ bills they print, the less they're worth. If we are
percieved as recklessly increasing the $ supply by investors, they
convert (Gold etc) and the value goes down further. What happens?
At somepoint we are all millionaires! ie Latin America.
(and no Gov Palin, Spain is not part of Latin America)

So just to recap.
The Government nationalizes the Auto industry. GM Failing would directly
cause 2 to 3 million people to lose their jobs. Thats just the start. Think
dominoes. It would get a lot worse. Gov of Mi says Chrysler failing would
cause a million lost jobs, (the big food chain).

So too big to fail? Yep. What to do? Nationalize, then make people
buy GM cars and trucks with tax incentives. Socialism for everyone!

And where did this all start out? Oh right. My Mom's dating the General.
Well, looks like that was just a bit of a ploy to get some attention,
probably orchestrated by Cerberus trying to push it's lady out
on the street. Kind of got used to it while Mom was in bed with the
Germans. Then the General comes calling, what's next?

I don't think anybody other than GM would be better. But I don't
know who I want Mother Dating.

My guess is Mom's going on wellfare, and there will be another
box to check on my return in april. That will be the which brand
of US car will I be buying with my government issued coupon.

Doubt they will want me driving my 78 SE D150 shorty.

Last here's a picture of a product made by a Co, that was
number 1 in truck production in 1900.

Things Change Comrade.

Some very good points raised here. With the exception of my 1st car, I have always owned Chrysler products, currently own 8. I hate to think of Chrysler being sold especially to GM. Don't know if I could bring myself to buy another if that were the case.

Fine points LAST440. You're right on the mark. As Reagan said:
Quote:
Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
