Thanks for the pictures! Yesterday we took the girlfriend's car in for emissions -- and while there I asked the assistant manager (at the state-run facility) what all an '81 needed emissions wise ('81s and earlier simply get a 2-speed tailpipe test). She claims that it needs all of the emissions equipment present on the sticker in the engine bay. Now in Denver there are about 10 independent (non-state run) emissions shops for 1981 and earlier vehicles -- supposedly they're more lax and as long as the vehicle passes (regardless of equipment) you're good to go.
I took some time examining different '81/'82 trucks at the yard yesterday and my truck really has none of its emissions equipment left. I pulled a sticker off of an '81 D300 crew cab (HDC) and it shows a much more limited amount of emissions junk.
I then looked up what all they had put into my truck -- all purchased in late '06, installed mid-February '07.
The first being the engine. A re-manufactured unit from Checker/O'Reilly:

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/EDB1/2176.oapAlong with all the invoice shows a new water pump, thermostat, fuel pump, starter, belts, coolant hoses, etc.
I have no invoice for the Edelbrock carb, Mopar Peformance air cleaner/valve covers, radiator, exhaust (dual straights with glass packs) or rebuilt transmission.
As per the
Air Care Colorado website, is there any reason why the truck couldn't pass with all of it's new/current equipment and without all of the original emissions equipment? The standards for an '81 are 1.2 parts per million for carbon monoxide and 220 parts per million for hydrocarbons. '81s and earlier aren't checked for NOx (oxides of nitrogen).
I know they at least do a mirror check for catalytic converters -- and honestly I'd prefer to go back to a more stock exhaust system. With that being said, I see RockAuto has a lot of reproduction exhaust components. I'd probably do just a Y into cat, into muffler as I don't see any reason to hunt down a mini-ox since it doesn't have the rest of the original emissions/heat valve stuff anyhow.
Thoughts?
