Your understanding of the "2WD" mode is close. Just Google "NP203" and you should see an explanation of the workings of the 203 transfer case........ I understand now about your thinking of restoration process. Thar is the way I did it also on my 1979 Dodge Warlock and '74 Plymouth TrailDuster.

Makes sense now. I see there are conversion kits to make it a partial vs full time. I might look into that depending on what kind of gas mileage I get when I get it running. I want it to be pretty close to original but not sure if I will go all the way ot not yet. I also want it to be semi-practical.

Those are a couple sweet trucks you have!

Keep it stock. The aftermarket stresses the transfer case gears and chain. With a conversion you might pick up 1-2 MPG, but the cost & labor of the conversion will take a couple of years to recoup of regular driving. Remember the truck is square like a brick when driving above 55MPH. Pushes a lot of air. Gas prices in 1978 was about $1.00 a gallon.

Gotcha. My uncle removed the front drive shaft and kept it in the cab to save gas. Hoping to get some of the cab cleaned up soon. Looking for something good to get rid of the musty/barn/mouse odor that I can spray or set in the cab and let it absorb it all.

Removing the drive line is the worst thing you can do the the NP203 Transfer Case. The removal and putting the TC in high lock will eventually blow out the front shaft seal. Also putting undue stress on the internal components...... The way the NP203 TC works is to put the power of torque traction to the wheel that needs it the most. Using all four wheels to split it as needed. The TC determines the torque split............. Did you get a chance to look at the parts in the DodgeConnection Web site?

Never said it was a good idea, just that that is what he did. I have looked through the site some. Not ready to get any components yet. Need to get it cleaned up a little so it can be worked on.

Got the seats and carpet out and the exterior washed. Nearly all the mouse remnants have been removed. Likely some left behind the dash. Going to need some new tubs and some metal work around the seat belt mounts.

Does the window need to come out to get the rest of the dash out? Found the two bolts at the bottom so it's free'd up but don't see any other mounting points up top to get it the rest of the way out. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like there are some bolts hidden under the seal for the windshield so I guess it needs to come out...
